Craig Attebery: The Complete Guide to Perspective Drawing: From One-Point to Six-Point (Paperback, 2018, Routledge) No rating

Computers can calculate perspective angles and create a drawing for us, but the spontaneity of …

To begin with, pencils and paper are not going away soon. The freedom and spontaneity of mark-making, the tactile quality of a writing surface and drawing instrument, and the immediacy and convenience of the human touch will forever remain seductive. The sensuality of the hand persists and will survive as a valuable aid to visual communication, as will the need to place your ideas accurately on paper. Furthermore, knowledge is empowering. As a professional, understanding the foundations of drawing, how we process images, and how we interpret what we see are principal skills. This knowledge transfers directly to your drawings, giving them an air of confidence.

What a start! Surprisingly, this still holds up just as well in the AI hell we are in currently.

Devin Korwin: Creative Fundamentals (EBook) No rating

This is the culmination of years of collected knowledge, simplified into a really approachable introduction …

So far, it's super-compressed knowledge in a tiny ebook. The lessons are actually very interesting, & make me wish I could afford to be Korwin's student, really...

Such a wonderful little gem. Now permanently on all my devices that I could put the ebook onto, I'll lovingly keep it by my side.

Perfect for explaining... our perception of the world, really!

While I personally do not consider myself to be a necessarily "realist" painter, I will nonetheless seek out a variety of books, including ones on realism. Still, I found the book to be surprisingly pleasant to read despite it containing mostly technical information. The key points that I've loved: - explaining the complexities of light transmission, refraction, and reflection - "You are always painting light" - having a full, lightfast pigment table for traditional painting (& thus, being able to kind of re-create it digitally) - being very in-depth, without being extremely technical (very good recommendation for beginners!) - explaining each concept that could go into any possible piece

This list is non-exhaustive, of course, as I would hate to just explain the whole book in one review. The language is simply just light enough where it's super easy to pick up, which is wonderful! Additionally, I think I'll …

Richard Alan Schmid, Katie Swatland: ALLA PRIMA II - Expanded Edition (Hardcover, 2013, Stove Prairie Press) No rating

TALENT Don't bother about whether or not you have it. Just assume you do, and then please forget about it.

ALLA PRIMA II - Expanded Edition by , (Page 9)

This is barely the first chapter, and I'm in love with Schmid's way of writing. The above is just a little excerpt, because if I could, I'd just paste the entire ten pages as a quote so far.

Can't wait to finally make some notes from this one. Really been wishing to start doing it, but somehow never found the time...

Not sure how I managed to jank up the book's page this badly, dear god. No clue how to fix it so other bookwyrm users can see each of them separately, after all, they're not just "editions" of 1 book but a whole series... thought I was making a "series list" . Cries

Anyways, I'm barely a few pages in but it's a nice read -- still, I think I'll first go over Gurney's book & Alla Prima II, and then return to it. Feels like a more proper way of reading things.
