Working for positive change in the world

5 stars

This book is a great reminder that each of us have the power to make positive changes in the world. It also shows that unfortunately sometimes the path to justice is long and slow but we should ask try to do our part to move the journey forward.

Josh's decision to get involved after reading about the Groveland Four in college and then driving past Groveland helped ensure that pardons were issued. His action and passion helped inspire lots of others to help as well.

Fine (GraphicNovel, 2022, Liveright Publishing Corporation) 5 stars

Informative and moving

5 stars

An informative, caring ook at gender with input from many folks outside the male/female binary. I came to the book with some shallow understanding about all the varieties of gender and finished it much better informed.

This quote from near the end really resonates with me: "and wouldn't it be cool if we all just talked about gender the way that we talk about falling in love?

I wanna have a conversation about it.

Everybody falls in love-

-well, maybe not everybody but a lot of people-

-and in a lot of different ways, and it's kinda weird, and you can have conversations about it."

Toss in your line, the fishin' is fine!

5 stars

I came to this book after many years of listening to the band of the same name (they named the band after the book).

I really liked the writing style and eclectic topics of the book. The recurring characters and themes meander along like a stream: here placid and smooth, there fast and tumbling and in some spots a little murky from turbulence.

I wish I'd read it sooner and will likely read it again.

Good take on gig work on alien planet

4 stars

Looks at what gig work might look like on an alien world that humans settled. Interesting story with found family. Tongue is firmly in cheek at times with solid jabs gig apps, hipsters, men with opinions on everything and more!

Very good 2nd book in the Delta-v series

5 stars

Critical Mass is a very good second book in the Delta-v series. While very good fiction, it is intended to be a realistic telling of what could be possible in addressing climate change if a motivated, small group of people go outside of norms to achieve their goals.

Some of the plot point are deliberately optimistic, but in the afterword Daniel Suarez wrote that was deliberate in an attempt to inspire people to action.

My only quibble was the simplistic handwaving around the how cryptocurrency magically makes the economics work in favor of the protagonists.

Interesting read, somewhat abrupt ending

4 stars

An interesting read but it ended pretty abruptly which made the story feel unfinished to me.

The premise is: 'symptomers’, humans whose strange abilities and bizarre experiences might just mark the emergence of a new species.

The stories of symptomers were interesting and engaging, but they end about 2/3rds through.

To me it is well worth reading for the different (South Korean) cultural viewpoints on modern life and the idea that it could be causing evolution into a new species.

Content warning for eating disorders, body horror and torture.

I'm Waiting for You (Paperback, 2022, Harper Voyager) 5 stars

Interesting use of time dilation as a tool

5 stars

The first and last short stories are excellent and very moving. Make sure you read the end notes that explain how the first short story occurred.

The middle short story was also good but was very philosophical and not as engaging for me.
