Good military space opera

Content warning slavery, death of family
Good military space opera from Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Moon with well developed characters. There is a somewhat abrupt jump forward in time to move the plot forward, but it is later eased several times when characters reminisce about the past.
The primary driver for the main character is being enslaved when young, so slavery is mentioned frequently. However the story deliberately does not go into graphic details of all the horrors related to slavery.
I plan to continue the series but will pause a while before continuing.
