George Orwell: Animal Farm and 1984 Nineteen Eighty-Four (Paperback)

Contains:

To me, one of the most important pair of books ever written

I don't think it's controversial to say that 1984 and Animal Farm are some of the most seminal political books ever written. What I had forgotten since the last time I read them was how absolutely wonderfully they were written.

1984 in particular is full of gorgeous, succinct imagery that really emphasises the squalour that people live in in 20th century London.

The main character is explicitly a bad person. He spends a lot of time at the beginning of the novel full of prejudice, but it becomes very clear toward the end that he is just surviving in a hostile environment.

Animal Farm is similarly well-written, however, being a novella, it leaves a lot to the imagination. The pacing is brilliant though. It goes through years on the farm without feeling like it's dragging, but again, highlighting the ever-increasing plight of the animals.

I can't remember exactly when I stopped reading, but I was disappointed in this book. "radicalized" was so cleverly written and well-paced, but this novel really doesn't reach those heights. Don't get me wrong, I learnt a lot about the dangers of the internet, but truly, such uninteresting, unlikable characters to follow.

Very intense opening. Written as if the reader knows everything about cyber-security, but gives us enough characters who require an explanation that it's very understandable.

A tragicomic glimpse into the near future

This is an anthology of 4 novellas that explore the near-future in an ambivalent, lighthearted way.

All 4 stories do a fantastic job of simultaneously admonishing corporate greed and failing societal systems, and humanizing individuals affected by these bodies.

This is truly a book that everyone who cares about the future of humanity should read; a stark warning against selfishness and corporate, government power.

Carbon and Silicon

A beautiful exploration of the human spirit in the face of insurmountable social systems.

Includes very realistic and grim depictions of our future, and explores transhumanism very well.
