L'ho preso in inglese dopo aver visto il film "The quiet girl" (in irlandese con sottotitoli) che ne è stato tratto. Film bellissimo, forse pure migliore del libro, che è narrato in prima persona ma abbastanza scarno e secco, quasi verista. Lo stile è piano, un racconto breve che si divora. Un libro sull'essere genitori biologici piuttosto che adottivi, un testo di una semplicità e potenza incredibile. Mi ha ricordato sia per lo stile scarno sia per i sentimenti sottesi "L'Arminuta". Anche se qui la protagonista è più giovane e ingenua.
In momenti come questo in cui si tenta di far arretrare i diritti civili, andrebbe fatto leggere nelle scuole. L'ho poi preso e letto anche in italiano.

Another powerful and touching story from Keegan, beautifully written and with striking attention to emotional detail. I saw someone describe it as a triumph of narration from a child's perspective, and I have to agree. I was really looking forward to reading this, after recently finishing Small Things Like These, and it did not disappoint. I wouldn't look at these until after reading it, but there's an informative review from NPR here, and some very interesting thoughts from Keegan about the story specifically and fiction/writing/reading in general here (in response to students' questions about the book).
