My daughter was quite enchanted by this story and the illustrations. I found it a little awkward to read aloud, unlike Alison Lester's many other wonderful books. The ending was a little... simple?
This book was ideal for reading aloud to my daughter, who is 5 years old and learning to read herself. The illustrations are very sweet, and the story is easy for children to relate to, even if they aren't Japanese cats. A good way to show children that learning to read takes a little time and courage.

The glow-in-the-dark pictures in this book are a cute gimmick, but I was a bit disappointed to tell the truth. To see the glow effect you need to turn off the lights, and then you can't read the story. The text and more of the illustrations (even just the outlines) need to glow too, so we can read it in the dark!
