Fantastic narration by Joe Morton. Absolutely amazing, eloquent writing by Ralph Ellison, I wish every writer had his talent for description. I have to admit I didn’t understand a lot of the allegory and deeper meaning though.

I didn’t bother reading the song lyrics at the end.

Even though I’ve had a copy of this book on my shelf for many years, I didn’t get around to reading it until now, when I listened to the audiobook instead. However, the couple of times I picked up my copy to check the text for something, I discovered that the audiobook is not exactly the same as the printed copy, as though it is a later draft; that the author made changes to the original before the audio was recorded. I wonder why this is so? Now I feel I’ll have to read the printed version to see how different they are. It is beautiful writing and a very original story.

A bit torn as to whether to give thus book 3 or 4 stars. It’s well written, but falls flat somehow. So 3.5 stars, I guess.
