This was a great retelling of the Island of Dr. Moreau by HG Wells. I enjoyed this book more than the original. It's focused on the experiences of Dr. Moreau's daughter (a new addition compared to Wells' story) and an Englishman who comes to work for the family. The hybrids are complex characters, and the plot takes interesting and engaging twists. Colonialism is a significant theme, as with Mexican Gothic.

Content warning small bit about the last chapter
I loved this trilogy from Eden Robinson, including this last installment. Such a deeply creative and inventive story, with twists and characters I didn't expect at all. Tricksters and witches and other wondrous characters abound. I found the ending chapter a bit of a letdown, though--I would have preferred it if Robinson had actually written a chapter on those elements rather than just listing them quickly. This is a small thing, though; generally I loved the book!
