The good stuff:
- original and interesting magic system
- compelling murder mystery
- compassionate mental illness representation

The not so good stuff:
- Flat characters
- Pacing issues
- Difficult to keep track of multiple suspects, especially during the climax
- A romance that felt somewhat forced

If you like this kind of medieval psuedo-French setting, grisly murder mysteries, and have a tolerance for YA cliches, this might be a new favourite. For me it didn't quite land, though the mystery was enough to motivate me to finish it at least.
