A Sweeping History
5 stars
This book is a sweeping tour of Indian history, with nearly no stone left unturned. Starting with the Indus Valley Civilization and continuing until the modern day, Truschke examines changes across the subcontinent over the centuries while making sure to always keep Indians at the center, even when going further afield to study international influences. There is a lot less on post independence India than one might expect, although Truschke discusses that topic in the excellent chapter on her historiographical approach at the end of the book. Overall, this tome serves as a rigorous introduction to India's history, pointing the way to further reading on topics of interest. Highly recommend
