A Revelatory Examination of the History of Energy and Energy Discourse
5 stars
This is one of those rare books that significantly shifts your perspective on an important topic - in this case, the notion of historical "transitions" from previous forms of energy. Fressoz convincingly demonstrates this history is a fallacy, methodically tracking the use and continual growth of essentially every energy source across human history (wood, coal, gas, etc.) and showing that new energy sources instead accelerated the further use of those previous methods. In addition, he uncovers the roots of the "transition" verbiage in atomic age discourse that was advocating for a move to nuclear energy, with this terminology later co-opted and misinterpreted as a historical phenomena. This importantly shifts the debate about a "green transition" away from a historical one that assumes new energy sources will automatically banish the old to one that requires grappling with how to intentionally eliminate previous sources. Highly recommend
