Mrs. Kerry Sanders, that very wealthy American lady, had engaged Jonah Dereham, ex-prize-winning jockey, to buy a steeplechaser for the son of a special friend. The son was Nicol Brevett, an aggressive young man with a sudden, dangerous temper. But there was more than wealth and sophistication in this horse deal. As he left the stables he took a crushing blow on the head and heard a voice say: "We don't want your money, we want your horse." And that was just the beginning.
Very murky going early in this one trying to work out what was going on. Patience repaid in spades with all the excitement of the finish.
