Ben Waber reviewed Public Faces, Secret Lives by Wendy L. Rouse
A Thorough History of Queer People in the Women's Suffrage Movement
4 stars
This is a thorough, compelling history of queer people in the women's suffrage movement, laying out the immense role these people had throughout the movement's history. Previously these women (and some trans men) have had their queerness written out of that history, but the voluminous evidence that Rouse reviews here definitively corrects that injustice. There are some broader trends around queer lives and the goals and methods of the suffrage movement explored here, but it's definitely secondary to the primary goal of documentation. Highly recommend
