We now live in an “ordinal society.” Nearly every aspect of our lives is measured, ranked, and processed into discrete, standardized units of digital information. Marion Fourcade and Kieran Healy argue that technologies of information management, fueled by the abundance of personal data and the infrastructure of the internet, transform how we relate to ourselves and to each other through the market, the public sphere, and the state.

The personal data we give in exchange for convenient tools like Gmail and Instagram provides the raw material for predictions about everything from our purchasing power to our character. A Revelatory Analysis of the Role of Quantification in Society Today

This is an incisive analysis of how the methods of quantification and ranking, long valued by humans, have been accelerated and amplified across society due to new classes of data collection and processing algorithms. Healy and Fourcade also show how the often utopian conceptualization of nearly every major digital technology of the post WW2 era has not only failed to live up to those utopian notions, but almost inexorably enabled new realms of data capture and quantification. Importantly the authors argue this is not normally due to a well thought out plan, but rather is strongly influenced by both current societal norms, preferences for low friction, and economic imperatives. There aren't any answers here, but in terms of providing a holistic framework around this increasingly important phenomena you won't find a better book out there. Highly recommend
