In these two stories of young Monsieur Dupin— astute, scholarly, and a rambler during the night hours — Edgar Allan Poe presents two mysteries and demonstrates his detective hero's shrewd line of reason- ing in solving them.

In The Murders in the Rue Morgue, Monsieur Dupin is attracted by the strange circumstances of a more than ordinarily horrible murder to which there appears to be no clue. The Parisian police are at a loss, but Dupin, after some quiet investigation of his own, arrives at the solution, ingenious and correct.

The Purloined Letter presents a differ- ent sort of problem, but again Monsieur Dupin, drawing on his deep knowledge of human nature, finds the answer. Rick Schreiter's sensitive illustrations illuminate Poe's provocative stories and make this a volume to cherish. --front flap
