Dead Clever (Paperback, 2004, Justin, Charles & Co.) 3 stars

Unsatisfying & sloppy; YMMV

3 stars

Three stars, three and a half for engagement.

Aside from the need to suspend disbelief regarding everything from how & why our heroine wasn’t busted while sleuthing, how she lived on cigarettes and hardly any food, to how neatly she put the pieces together, to the use of “carriage return” for “enter” (1998 wasn’t THAT long ago) on a computer, we’d guess that one’s response to this story may well hinge on one’s experience and/or feelings regarding the college environment.

To us it mostly felt rather cookie-cutter and shallow. (If you think that was a gratuitous use of “rather,” brace yourself for the prevalence of “quite” in the novel.) Granted, it’s been decades since we’ve been an undergrad, but we can’t imagine such casual classroom operation, not just on one occasion but regularly. There was absolutely no sense of academic rigor. Characters seemed mostly almost caricatures, like paper doll people. …

The Arthurian Tarot (Paperback, The Aquarian Press) 5 stars

Friendly & interesting, with nice bibliography

5 stars

A charming little companion to the Matthews' deck of the same name, accessible whether you are new to their brand of Celtic/Arthurian scholarship or not, although a grounding in the Arthurian traditions as well of course as in Tarot is recommended. There are newer editions available, which might be better if you don't already have a copy (probably bought this one in the early 90s; it's a 1990 edition) as they are active scholars and always updating their vision.

One of those lightweight little fast reads that sets you up to want to learn more about the people and places it describes. I hope there are more of these about ancient places in Central and South America, even North America, because why not?

The Stars and the Blackness Between Them (Hardcover, 2019, Dutton Books, Dutton Books for Young Readers) 5 stars

It feels impertinent to try and capture the contemporary power, love, creativity, and reality of this book with my late-20thC idiom.

I recommend it unreservedly.

At the same time, in places i found Audre's narrative voice inconsistent -- her Trini dialect seemed to fall away sometimes, which was distracting. That, however, is my only critique.

Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. …

Review of 'The tea girl of Hummingbird Lane' on 'Goodreads'

4 stars

Slow starter, but worth staying the course. Would never call the prose beautiful, but the story of the tea and the people, relationships and connections, was enjoyable. Deeply researched, providing ideas and resources for further reading.

Had to DNF — interlibrary loan, couldn’t renew. Not as fun to read as Ibn Fadlan, but worth tracking down copies to have on hand… definitely this edition, as it seems to have good annotations. I hope it also includes his sketches. But, wow, so much more tedious than Fadlan.

Dorothy Porter Wesley at Howard University (Paperback, 2014, The History Press) 4 stars

Good book, interesting and full of important topics, American history, academic history, however you want to look at it. The pictures, and white space, made reading easy… you could even say it helps the reader pace themselves and reflect on deeper meanings and connections. Also plenty of room to place sticky notes!

Had to quit because of difficulties keeping up with the library e-book situation… kept crashing, having to “return” and re-borrow. Hope to read in hard copy another time, which would be better anyway for note-taking purposes.

Conversational, and hard to rate. In some ways it rubbed us the wrong way, with incomplete information and generalizations, but to be fair it's probably a good book for beginners and simple public reference. Wouldn't trust it for details. You can easily read it straight through, unlike with some other reference books. It has a reasonable amount of photos.
3.5 to 4 stars, a good junior library general title, gift shop book, etc.
